Poster Print - Shared Window x Ethos
“Shared Window is a project initiated by Planned Parenthood Columbia Willamette that aims to uplift the community and celebrate the North Portland MLK neighborhood. Connecting small businesses with local artists, FISK Gallery helps showcase the beauty of collaboration. Together, we can all be a good neighbor.”
Ethos is a unique and important non-profit that has provided the Portland community with access to music education and outreach, ensuring that music lessons and resources are available to any student regardless of their class or background. As a pianist and music educator, it’s a big deal for me to see this type of institution impact hundreds of children’s lives—where they might not otherwise have had the opportunity. The ability to write and play music changed the trajectory of my life. It gave me the ability to share a universal language and feel through the intensity of being a person in the world. Everyone deserves access to that. When tasked with making artwork that would reflect Ethos’ ethos, I wanted to create something that illustrates the joy of being immersed in music and what it can feel like to experience unity with an instrument. Sometimes educational posters and print materials can feel a bit sterile, so I aimed to make something fun that both kids and adults can identify with. Places like Ethos do not exist in every city and private lessons are not accessible to most people. I am honored to share a piece of myself with the educators and students at Ethos.

Carb’s Bong Orchestra
Conductor:
Carly Barton
Performers:
Ryan Carlisle, Wolf Black, Coco Madrid, Dr. Brianna Sas, Alec Marchant, Emily Stennes, Tony Remple, John Kammerle, Matthew Henderson, Derrick Spotts, Dr. Sarah K-D, Dan K-D, Emma Barnett
Carb’s Bong Orchestra was created to observe the 4/20 holiday in a celebration of bubbles and laughter. Inspired by my experience performing in the Tatsuya Nakatani Gong Orchestra (NGO), I felt compelled to gather an orchestra of my own. Loosely modeled by his conducting styles, this is a semi-freeform PERFORMANCE piece. Thank you, Nakatani!
The 13-person bong orchestra is made up of friends/musicians divided into 4 sections: winds, bongs, bubblers, and percussion, mic’ed through a sound system with additional FX modules. Is this a bastardization? perhaps. Incredible? yes. A joke? no.
Special thank you to all of the performers for your collaboration, without you this would’ve been impossible!

Machine Music, Human Dance
Machine Music, Human Dance is a conceptual EP created for Takahiro Yamamoto’s performance NOTHINGBEING, which premiered on September 9th, 2022 at TBA:22.
“Based on philosophical and physical research in the approaches to nothingness as well as extensive discussions and reflections with participating artists about their own sense of existence in society, their needs in life, and their embodied daily experiences, this work will invite the viewers to “be” in the space together as they witness the performers engaging in questions of not thinking, feeling, surrendering, transforming, conjuring, and forgetting.”

To Bloom, To Glow – fundraiser compilation in support of Russian LGBTQIA+ community
“The LGBTQIA+ community in Russia today is extremely unsafe and stigmatized, and, unfortunately, activist organizations don't get enough support from people inside the country. That's why we decided to organize an international financial support event for the Russian LGBTQ+ organization that we consider one of the most influential ones in Russia right now.”
– Ekaterinburg Resource Center For LGBT
“While being mostly a city-level organization, its activists have been sharing a great amount of important articles and informational resources about LGBTQIA+ issues in Russia on their social media, and they are doing amazing job of educating people and helping LGBTQIA+ folks in need of financial, psychological, and legal aid. Unfortunately, they also are under constant harassment and threats from various hate groups.”

OST
The piano has always been the most effective tool for me to meditate — to check in with myself. A way to be mindful or mindless, ponder aimlessly or with focused intent, and mostly, a way to feel through the intensity of being a living thing.
“OST collects five contemplative pieces written for piano by Carly Barton, representing a life-long dive through N64 deep cuts and anime ambience. Evoking the lonely and ethereal spaces where Nausicaä first meets a living Ohmu, and Hyrule’s protector awakes from a century long slumber, these compositions continue Carly’s exploratory work reimagining the worlds coded within soundtracks of anime and video games, otherwise seen in their year-long monthly installment based projects Vidya World (2018) and ARC: Anime Resource Center (2020). With this limited edition, Carly has self published the sheet music in a beautifully minimal Riso pressed book, and included a USB drive filled with MIDI and audio realizations of the songs in both console and arcade versions.”
